Section Governance
The Governing Council of each Section consists of elected officers to include: President, Vice President, Vice President-Elect, Past President, Treasurer, and Representative to the Governing Board of The Society. Section Governing Councils may identify and appoint additional members, including a Secretary of the Section. Section officers are elected by members of The Society who are on record as belonging to that Section in a ballot provided concurrently with the election for officers of The Society.
Dr. Alvin M. Simmons is a Research Entomologist at USDA-ARS, U.S. Vegetable Laboratory, Charleston, SC. He received a B.S. in biology (East Carolina University, 1980), and M.S. (1983) and Ph.D. (1987) in entomology (University of Kentucky).
Dr. Jessica L. Ware received her BSc from UBC in 2001. She received her PhD in Entomology from Rutgers in New Brunswick, NJ, in 2008, where she focused on the evolution of Dictyoptera and Odonata under Dr. Michael L. May. She then had an NSF Postdoctoral fellowship on termite evolution, which she undertook at the American Museum of Natural History with Dr. David Grimaldi from 2008-2010.
Dr. Sujaya Rao received a doctoral degree in Entomology from the University of Minnesota. Subsequently, she was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Delaware and at UC Berkeley. She then worked as an Extension Advisor at UC Davis before moving to Oregon State University where she is now a Professor engaged in research, teaching and extension.
Dr. Paula Shrewsbury received her B.S. in Plant Science from the University of Rhode Island, her M.S. in Entomology from the University of California, Riverside, and her Ph.D. in Entomology from the University of Maryland. Paula is an Associate Professor and Extension Specialist in Entomology at the University of Maryland.
Dr. Gary Brewer received his Ph.D. in Entomology from Kansas State University in 1984. His MS in Entomology (1978) and BS in Zoology (1974) were from the University of Nebraska.
Lina Bernaola was born in Lima, Peru. She attended the San Marcos National University, where she got her B.S. in biological sciences and a minor in molecular biology. Her professional experience, as well as her passion in the world of plants, began when she joined the International Potato Center (CIP) in Lima to perform her undergraduate thesis. Based on this experience, Lina joined Louisiana State University to pursue her M.S.
