Manuscript Reviewer
ESA's peer-reviewed publications would not be possible without the support of our dedicated peer reviewers. Peer reviewers provide feedback to our editors and authors on a paper's writing quality as well as the data and experimental design reported. Each paper published by one of ESA's peer-reviewed journals has been reviewed by at least two peer reviewers.
ESA's editors strive to pair reviewers with papers in their areas of interest and expertise. If you have not served as a peer reviewer and would like to, sign up by completing this form: New Reviewer Application. Once we receive your application, the Editorial Office will create your account in ESA's online manuscript submission system, ScholarOne, and contact you with more information.
Editor
Each ESA publication is led by an editor-in-chief, an internationally recognized scientist whose reputation brings prestige and visibility to the publication they oversee. Some ESA journals are led by co-editors-in-chief, who share responsibility for and leadership of their journal. The editors-in-chief conduct initial reviews of new manuscripts and withdraw or reject papers that are not appropriate for full peer review. They also recruit knowledgeable, committed entomologists to serve as subject editors for their publications.
Subject editors manage the peer review process and make final decisions on manuscripts. Because subject editors are responsible for the timeliness and fairness of the review process and their decision letters directly influence authors’ manuscripts, their work is extremely important to the reputation of ESA’s publications. Subject editors also attend periodic meetings and provide feedback throughout the year to their editors-in-chief and editorial boards.
If you are interested in serving as a subject editor, please contact ESA at pubs@entsoc.org and staff will be happy to assist you. Typically, that includes forwarding a copy of your CV to the editor-in-chief of the journal, who then will let us know if you meet the requirements or if the journal is in need of an editor with your expertise. Typically, editors-in-chief like subject editors to be associate professors (or equivalent) with a robust publishing and reviewing history. ESA issues a call for applications when an editor-in-chief position is available.
Associate editors act as super-reviewers, agreeing to prioritize reviewing for ESA journals. Associate editors are often invited to review manuscripts where the first two reviewers have differing opinions or when two reviews are difficult to obtain. When journals need new subject editors, they often turn towards their associate editors for candidates first because they have a proven review track record. The associate editor position is perfect for early career professionals, but it's open to people of all career stages who would like to support ESA through reviewing. Email pubs@entsoc.org with a copy of your CV and the journal you'd be interested in joining and ESA staff will be happy to share your application with the editors-in-chief.
Publications Council
The Publications Council oversees the health and success of the ESA publications program, including the financial health of each publication; oversees the recruitment and appointment of new editor(s)-in-chief; sets strategic goals and metrics for the publications enterprise and provides oversight to ensure that goals are met; identifies opportunities for growth and improvement of the ESA publications program; and sets overall policy for ESA publications. The Council includes the vice president-elect and vice president of the Society, one representative elected from each ESA Section, and five at-large members appointed by the ESA president. The at-large appointments are made with broad representation in mind, particularly in terms of Section, geographic, and career-stage representation. Section representatives and at-large members of the Publications Council serve four-year terms; the Vice President of the Society serves as Publications Council chair.

Editorial Boards
Each ESA publication is overseen by an editorial board, whose members are selected from among the subject editors of the journal (with the exception of the Books Editorial Board, which does not have subject editors and has an editorial board made up of representatives from each ESA Section). Editorial boards focus on the operational excellence of the publication they serve, supporting the editor-in-chief in accomplishing the publication's goals and identifying and considering opportunities to improve publication quality, editorial efficiency, and author experience. Editorial board members serve three-year terms; the editorial board is chaired by the journal’s editor(s)-in-chief.
