Early Career Professional Recognition Award

The Plant-Insect Ecosystems (P-IE) Section of the Entomological Society of America (ESA) seeks to recognize outstanding early career professional members as part of an initiative to foster the next generation of entomologists. The section plans to grant 1 recognition award of $1000 to an early career professional who has made an exceptional impact in research, education, and/or outreach/extension in the field of P-IE.

Eligibility

To be eligible for these awards, individuals must be current members of the Entomological Society of America and the Plant-Insect Ecosystems Section. Individuals must qualify as an Early Career Professional, defined as any member within five years of having received their terminal degree. 

Recipients must either attend the P-IE Section Awards Ceremony and Networking Event at the ESA National Meeting or submit a 3-minute video highlighting their contributions to be played at the Awards Ceremony. All recipients must contribute a post in the P-IE newsletter.

Recipients are encouraged, but not required, to present a poster or oral presentation at the national meeting. Given the uncertainty around funding this year, we are relaxing the presentation requirement in 2025.


Nomination Requirements

Nomination packages must include the following: 

  • One-page cover letter/personal statement with the following information:
         a. Area of study
         b. Professional goals and how involvement with ESA has benefited the applicant
  • Letter of recommendation in support of the application from a mentor or supervisor with the following information:
         a. Affirmation the applicant is eligible for the award
         b. How this award will benefit the applicant
         c. Summary of applicant’s relevant achievements

  • Two-page CV with the following:
         a. Section I: Background Information
         b. Section II: Research
         c. Section III: Teaching and Mentoring
         d. Section IV: Extension/Outreach
         e. Section V: Service

Evaluation Criteria

Nominees will be judged using the following criteria for a total of 100 points:

  1. Academic record and research accomplishments; CV (20)
  2. Letter of support (20)
  3. Contributions to teaching and mentoring (15)
  4. Contributions to service and outreach, especially to ESA (15)
  5. How ESA has impacted your career and/or professional development presently and into the future (30)

Deadline

Nomination packages must be submitted online via the by June 1 annually. All applications must be submitted through the Early Career Professional Recognition Award Website
